What do you hear that isn’t there yet?

Tim has never approached the drums as something that simply sits underneath the music or keeps everything in place. He listens for what the song is asking for, but also for what might be missing from it: a movement, a tension, a texture, or a rhythm that can give the music another dimension. The part has to belong to the song, but it should also bring something into the room that wasn’t there before.

At some point, you have to stop sounding like what you learned.

Every musician begins somewhere, shaped by the records they heard, the players they studied, and the techniques they spent years trying to understand. For Tim, those influences were never meant to become a destination. The deeper work is figuring out what you would choose when you are no longer trying to sound like anyone else, and allowing those choices to develop into something that feels unmistakably your own.

MIND

Change the pattern. Change the way you think.

Doing something unfamiliar has always been part of Tim’s creative process because the moment everything becomes comfortable, it becomes easy to repeat yourself without realizing it. Changing a movement around the kit, approaching a rhythm from another direction, or deliberately stepping away from the first idea can open possibilities that habit would never reveal. The point isn’t to make something complicated for the sake of being different. It’s to stay awake inside the process and remain curious about where another choice might lead.

Tim’s career has taken him through recording studios, stages around the world, different bands, television, visual art, teaching, and creative work far beyond the drum kit. Along the way, every room, collaboration, performance, and project has added something to the way he approaches music and creativity today. These are the experiences behind the work, and the perspective that comes from spending a lifetime making it.

The way Tim plays is the way he teaches. It starts with the music.

Tim’s approach to teaching begins with composition and the choices a drummer makes inside a piece of music. Technique is part of that, but knowing what to play, what to leave out, when to create space, and how to develop a voice of your own takes more than technique alone.

After more than four decades of playing, recording, touring, and creating, Tim also brings the physical and mental side of being a musician into the conversation: how the brain and body work together, how habits shape the way you play, and what it means to keep making music over a lifetime.

His private work, educational programs, live events, and drummer community continue through Stick Academy.
