Tim is one of the defining drummers of alternative and experimental rock, known for his polyrhythmic playing, unconventional compositions and unmistakable musical voice.
He has spent much of his career working inside music that asks unusual things of a drummer.
Before Primus, Alexander played with Major Lingo. He later moved into the Bay Area music scene and joined Primus in 1989, entering the band alongside bassist Les Claypool and guitarist Todd Huth, later Larry Lalonde during the period that would establish its best-known lineup. The music required a different kind of rhythmic thinking.
Primus compositions moved through odd meters, abrupt changes, heavy grooves, open spaces, and parts that did not follow conventional rock arrangements. Alexander's response was not simply to keep time underneath them. His drum parts became part of their architecture.
That approach can be heard throughout Suck on This, Frizzle Fry, Sailing the Seas of Cheese, Miscellaneous Debris, Pork Soda, and Tales from the Punchbowl.
By the early 1990s, Primus had moved from the Bay Area underground into an international career. Sailing the Seas of Cheese achieved gold status. Pork Soda entered the Billboard Top 10. “Wynona's Big Brown Beaver,” from Tales from the Punchbowl, received a Grammy nomination for Best Hard Rock Performance.
Alexander left Primus in 1996.
His work outside the band revealed a broader musical range. Laundry gave him a project in which he could write, sing, play drums, and work within a different rock structure. Attention Deficit placed him in an instrumental trio with guitarist Alex Skolnick and bassist Michael Manring, creating music built around improvisation, odd meter, and detailed rhythmic interaction.
He was also part of the early history of A Perfect Circle and recorded drums on “The Hollow” for Mer de Noms. His work later included performances with Blue Man Group and recordings and appearances across a number of other projects.
Throughout his career, Alexander has recorded on more than 25 releases, while also working as a producer, composer, and collaborator across projects beyond his own bands.

In 2003, Alexander returned to Primus.
The reunion produced Animals Should Not Try to Act Like People and another period of touring. In 2010, as Primus prepared to move into another phase of recording and touring, Alexander opted out of participating. Jay Lane stepped in on drums during that period.
Alexander returned to active work with Primus in 2013.
That next chapter produced another set of recordings, including Primus & the Chocolate Factory with the Fungi Ensemble, The Desaturating Seven, and Conspiranoid. It also brought years of international touring and another evolution in his playing.
Alexander left Primus in October 2024, closing a musical relationship that had occupied three distinct periods of his career. His work since then has brought other parts of his creative life further into view. One is visual art.
Alexander is a prolific abstract artist whose large scale paintings explore many of the same instincts found in his music: movement, tension, space, repetition, and intuition. He first showed his early work in 2011 and, after decades away from painting, returned to the canvas with a major body of new work shown in San Francisco in 2023.
His paintings have consistently reached exceptionally high valuations, including among collectors and within art spaces where his history in music carries little or no influence. The work has developed an identity and value independent of the career that made his name behind the drums.
In 2024, his work entered Gefen Gallery in San Francisco, bringing this side of his creative practice into another chapter.
Drum Education.
Through Stick Academy, which Tim and Shama Alexander launched in 2024, Alexander works with drummers on composition, musical identity, decision-making, and the physical and mental dimensions of playing. These pursuits may look separate. For Alexander, they come from the same place.
